IELTS Preparation

Academic Exam Preparation

Preparation for the Academic IELTS exam is two mornings per week from 9:30 to 12:45 at our accredited school in Newcastle upon Tyne.  This is dependent on student demand, please contact us to find out when you can join a course.

Each morning class is three hours of teaching time, plus a 15-minute break in the middle.  This allows 6 hours of class time each week (excluding holidays).

What can I prepare for? This course prepares students for the academic IELTS exam, a globally recognised exam taken by students who plan to study or work in English.  You can find out more about IELTS on the British Council Take IELTS website.   Our students are generally working towards grades of 6 or above

What will I study? The course will cover all four skills tested in the IELTS exam; reading, writing, listening and speaking, using a range of materials including test questions and regular timed paper practice.  You will also cover the language (grammar, vocabulary etc.,) required for a good score in the exam, and in English generally at this level.

My English isn’t good, can I still do this course? Most students doing this course are aiming to achieve scores of 6 or above in an Academic IELTS exam, which is a B2-C1 (upper-intermediate to advanced) level score.  We therefore require that students are ready to study at B2 level (UK Skills for Life ESOL Level 1) before starting the course. Before you register for the course, we will arrange a test to check your level, and may recommend that you improve your general English before joining an IELTS class.

How much does it cost? The minimum booking is for 2 weeks, and costs £80.  If you book a longer course, the cost per week decreases – see our fees page for full details.  You can book further weeks at any time, and fees can be paid in cash at our office or online via bank transfer.

How big are the classes? The minimum size is 6 and the maximum is 14.

How old must I be? The minimum age is 18

How can I join the class? If you are interested, please contact us or come to see us so that we can check your level and advise you.  You must book your course a minimum of one week before your preferred start date.

How do I take the exam? Action Language Pro Newcastle is not an IELTS   examination centre, so you must arrange to take the exam at another centre. This will cost £150- £250, depending on whether you need to take a UKVI exam. Please go to our links page to find out more about which exam and centre are right for you.

What happens if I pay for a course and can’t complete it?  If you need to cancel, we will provide a refund, minus a £10 admin fee, up to one week before you start.  Once your classes have begun we are unable to offer refunds, but please come and see us if you are having problems and we can try to help.  We can ‘pause’ your course for one week providing you inform us a minimum of one week in advance that you won’t be attending.

Where can I find out more?  You can read our Student handbook, look at the information for Students or contact us
